Program Description:

The study abroad program will allow students to examine and understand the health care system in Mexico and the key socio/cultural characteristics of health care disparities in diverse populations. The participants on this program will have some basic understanding of the key elements of health care systems and will be able to identify some useful ideas to address quality, access and delivery of care issues by comparing the US and Mexican health, socio, economic, political and cultural characteristics. The program will be developed as part of the collaboration activities between the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), the College of Nursing and the Department of Health Management and Informatics. The program will involve visits to the UADY facilities, health care organizations and community health programs conducted in collaboration with faculty and students from the UADY.

Students on this program should not book their flights.  Study Abroad will be arranging a group flight for all participants.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will examine and appreciate the key socio/cultural characteristics of the population in Mexico, especially the difference in urban and rural communities and their perception of healthcare and disease
  • Students will understand the key characteristics of the health care system in Mexico and the methods and policies used by the health care organizations to identify and address healthcare disparities in diverse populations
  • Students will work in teams to prepare an essay and/or case study that will identify at least one significant healthcare disparity and compare how it is addressed in the USA and Mexico. They will present their findings to faculty and students from both countries
