Program Description:
UCF in Mexico | Exploring the Yucatan
Summer 2018
June 17- 25 2018

No prerequisites, and all majors are welcome to apply.
Yucatan     Cancun

Program Description:

On this program, students will have the opportunity to discover the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Yucatan Peninsula. Students will learn about ancient and modern Maya culture. Among others, we will visit the UNESCO world heritage sites of Chichen Itzá, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, and Tulum, an ancient Maya fortress overlooking the Caribbean. We will learn about vibrant contemporary Maya culture by visiting local villages, taking cooking lessons, and exploring the colonial cities of Merida and Valladolid. Finally, students will have the opportunity to experience Yucatan's natural beauty, including excursions to cenotes (underground rivers) and the white sand beaches of the Caribbean.

  • To gain an appreciation of the people and culture of contemporary Yucatan, Mexico
  • To understand the history and prehistory of Maya civilization
  • To gain a new understanding of everyday life in another country

Itinerary for Summer A 2018 (subject to change)
  • Day 1: Arrival in Merida. Check into accommodations and enjoy a walking city tour with lunch included. Evening free time for all students. 
  • Day 2: Breakfast at hotel. Visit to Campeche City with lunch included. Return to hotel and evening free time. 
  • Day 3: Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to Chichen Itza with comprehensive site visit. Lunch and site visit to Cenote Ikkil included. Transfer to Valladolid and hotel accommodation. City tour in afternoon and evening free time. 
  • Day 4: Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to Merida and visit Ek Balam on the way (lunch included). Arrival in Merida and check in to accommodations. Walking downtown city tour in late afternoon. 
  • Day 5: Breakfast at hotel. Visit Gran Museo del Mundo Maya and/or Museo Canton. Time to have lunch on own. Afternoon ice cream and evening group dinner are included. 
  • Day 6: Breakfast at hotel. Visit Uxmal archeological site and Santa Elena village. Lunch and free afternoon. 
  • Day 7: Breakfast at hotel. Cooking class and lunch at community Emiliano Zapata Sur. Possibly Herbolaria class (time permitting). Free afternoon. 
  • Day 8: Breakfast at hotel. Excursion to cenotes (underground rivers). Lunch included. Transfer to Cancun and accommodation check in. Free afternoon and evening in Cancun. 
  • Day 9: Breakfast at hotel and check out. Transfer to Cancun airport. 


Pricing (based on minimum number of students and subject to amendment) 

Program fee:  $1,550

Payment 1: $1,000 due 28 February 
Payment 2: $550 due 30 march 

The following services are included as part of the program fee:
  • Hotel accommodation
  • All breakfasts, 6 lunches and 1 dinner
  • Local guides
  • Site tickets
  • Local ground transportation
  • UCF Abroad administrative fee ($350)
The following are not included:
  • Tuition
  • Flights
Program Cost Disclaimer: UCF reserves the right to alter or cancel the program at any time. In such cases, the university shall not be liable for airfare, transportation costs, and/or any other costs incurred by the student. The UCF Abroad Office will make reasonable efforts to notify students through reasonable means to inform the students when to reserve flights, students should not make any travel arrangements until being directed to do so by this office. Students should consult their travel agent about buying travel insurance to defray unanticipated costs in the event that travel plans change. UCF Abroad will make reasonable efforts to notify students via their Knights email when any significant changes are being made to the program. It is entirely within UCF Abroad's discretion as to what changes are considered significant.
