Program Description:

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (COM DIS) at the University of Central Florida is partnering with the School of Speech Therapy at the Universidad Santa Paula, San Jose, Costa Rica, to provide a study abroad clinical experience to graduate students preparing to become Speech-language Pathologists (SLPs). The goal of this program is to provide master's degree students in speech-language pathology with opportunities to:
  1. Obtain clinical experiences specifically in working with children and adults with communication disorders.
  2. Develop cultural competence by becoming familiar with the social and cultural differences that impact assessment and service delivery to children and adults with communication disorders in Costa Rica.
  3. Reflect on the implementation of sustainable practices in Costa Rica and demonstrate understanding of ramifications of cultural diversity on professional practice in working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Participants will be able to accrue clinical hours in assessment and treatment of children with communication disorders. The UCF and USP students will be paired for this experience allowing, both, to obtain clinical hours under the supervision of a team of specialized licensed speech-language pathologists with expertise in management of communication disorders.

Academic and clinical activities, in this program, will be coordinated by Dr. Linda l. Rosa-Lugo (UCF Faculty) and Dr. Melissa Araya (USP Faculty) and will be offered at the Universidad Santa Paula and various internship sites.

UCF and USP students will be emerged into multi, inter and transdisciplinary interactions during delivery of healthcare involving professionals from health and education areas including, Speech-language Pathologists, Audiologists and associated professionals providing healthcare to children and adults with communication disorders.
